Hello!, I am so incredibly excited that you’re thinking about popping into the clinic! I’m Janet, and if you haven’t met me yet, I’m the face (and the hands!) behind Oggy’s Footcare. I know, I know… visiting a foot health practitioner for the first time can feel a little bit daunting. Will it hurt? Will my feet be the "worst" she’s ever seen? (Spoiler alert: probably not, and even if they are, I love a challenge!).
I wanted to put this guide together for our Abbotsbury clinic page so you can see exactly what happens when you step through the door. My goal is to make you feel like you’re visiting a friend for a catch-up, just a friend who happens to be obsessed with making your feet feel like they’re walking on clouds!
First off, let’s talk about the vibe. While I spent a long time as a mobile practitioner (and I still love visiting people at home!), having a dedicated space here in Abbotsbury has been such a dream come true for me. The clinic is professional, of course, I’m a stickler for hygiene and high standards, but I’ve worked really hard to keep it feeling relaxed and cozy. No scary hospital vibes here, I promise!
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted with a big smile. I usually start by making sure you’re comfortable in the chair. It’s one of those fancy ones that does all the heavy lifting, so you can just lean back and relax. We’ll start with a bit of a "getting to know you" session. I’ll need to take down some registration details and have a look at your medical history. I promise I’m not being nosey! Knowing what medications you’re on or any health conditions you have is super important for foot health. It helps me tailor the treatment to exactly what your body needs.
Now, this is the part where we get a bit technical, but it’s honestly the most important part of your first visit! Every new client at Oggy’s Footcare gets a full neurovascular check. It sounds very "science-y," doesn't it? But don't worry, it doesn’t hurt a bit!
Essentially, I’m acting as a bit of a foot detective. I’ll be checking the blood flow to your feet (the vascular part) and the sensation in your skin (the neurological part). I’ll feel for your pulses, yes, you have pulses in your feet!, and I might use a little device called a Doppler to listen to them. It sounds like a little "whoosh-whoosh" heartbeat.
I also use a tiny little tool called a monofilament. It’s just a thin piece of plastic that I press against different spots on your foot to see if you can feel it. It’s vital because sometimes we lose sensation in our feet without even realizing it. If I find anything that worries me, I’ll let you know and we can discuss if a chat with your GP is needed. It’s all about keeping you safe and mobile!
If you’re living with diabetes, your first visit is even more crucial. I take diabetic foot health incredibly seriously. Because diabetes can affect both circulation and sensation, even a tiny blister or a small cut can turn into a big problem if it isn't spotted early.
During your check, I’ll be looking specifically for any signs of ulcer risk or changes in your foot structure. It’s all about prevention! I’ve seen so many clients find huge relief just by having a professional pair of eyes on their feet regularly. It’s one less thing for you to worry about, and I’m always here to answer those "is this normal?" questions you might have.
Once we’ve done the paperwork and the checks, it’s time for the "main event", the treatment! This is where I get to use all my specialized tools to get your feet back in tip-top shape. This first appointment usually lasts about 60 minutes because I like to be thorough (and I do enjoy a good chat!).
Here’s a little taster of what we might cover:
Nail Care: I’ll cut and file your toenails professionally. If you’ve been struggling with thick or fungal nails, don’t worry at all! I have the right equipment to thin them down and make them look and feel so much better.
Corn and Callus Removal: Oh, I do love a good callus removal! If you have hard skin that’s making it painful to walk, or a pesky corn that feels like a stone in your shoe, I’ll gently clear that away for you.
Ingrown Nails: If you’re dealing with ingrown nails, please don’t try to perform "bathroom surgery" yourself! I can treat these safely and give you advice on how to stop them from coming back.
The Bonus Round: If you want a little extra treat, I can even cut and file your fingernails for an extra £10. It’s a lovely way to feel completely pampered before you leave.
I’m a big believer in "prevention is better than cure," so before you head off, we’ll have a little chat about self-care. I’ll give you tips on how to look after your feet at home and, this is a big one, we’ll talk about footwear!
I know, I know… we all love a pretty pair of shoes, but sometimes our favorites aren't doing our feet any favors. I’ll give you honest, practical advice on what to look for in a shoe to prevent foot pain or bunions from getting worse. Think of me as your foot’s best friend, giving you the "real talk" you need!
To finish every treatment, I apply a high-quality foot cream and give you a short foot massage. It’s the absolute best part! It helps stimulate circulation and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. My clients often tell me they feel like they’re walking on air when they leave the clinic, and honestly, that is the most rewarding part of my job. Seeing someone walk in hobbling and walk out with a spring in their step? Nothing beats it!
The first appointment is priced at £50, which covers the full 60-minute session, the comprehensive neurovascular check, and your initial treatment. It’s an investment in your mobility and your comfort, and I promise you, your feet will thank you for it!
Whether you’ve got a specific issue like a verruca or you just need some help with general maintenance, I am here to help. I’ve seen it all, so please don’t ever feel embarrassed. We’re all friends here!
If you’re ready to book or if you just have a few more questions, please do reach out. You can find all the details on our contact and booking page. I can’t wait to meet you and your feet very soon!
Until then, take care of those toes! 👣✨
