Oh, hello there! I’m so glad you’ve popped by the blog today! If we haven't met properly yet, I’m Janet, the face behind Oggy’s Footcare, and if there is one thing I am absolutely, 100% passionate about, it’s making sure your feet are as happy as a Dorset local on a sunny day at Chesil Beach!
As a Foot Health Practitioner, I spend my days peering at toes, filing away at stubborn bits, and chatting away with my lovely clients across South and Central Dorset. And let me tell you... I’ve seen it all! From the "I’ve had these trainers since 1994" look to the "but they were on sale!" fashion choices that lead to some very unhappy arches.
We often think of our shoes as just an accessory to our outfit, like a nice scarf or a jaunty hat... but they are actually the foundation for your entire body! If the foundations are wonky, the whole house starts to creak, right? That’s why I wanted to sit down and have a proper "shoe-chat" with you about the most common footwear blunders I see at my professional foot care Abbotsbury clinic.
So, grab a cuppa, put your feet up (literally!), and let’s see if you’re making any of these seven common mistakes!
I’ll be the first to admit it... I love a bit of glamour as much as the next person! But oh boy, your feet do pay a price for those sky-high stilettos. When you wear high heels, you’re basically forcing your entire body weight onto the balls of your feet. It’s like trying to balance a grand piano on a couple of toothpicks!
This pressure doesn't just stay in your toes; it travels up. It tightens your calf muscles and puts a massive strain on your Achilles tendon. Over time, this can lead to some real nasties like plantar fasciitis or metatarsalgia (that burning pain in the ball of your foot).
The Fix: You don’t have to bin them entirely (phew!), but try to save them for special occasions. When you do go for a heel, look for "block heels" that are less than two inches. They give you way more stability! And if you’ve been wearing them a lot and noticing pain, come see me for some foot pain advice!
This one catches so many people out! You think, "I’m being sensible, I’m wearing flats!" But if those flats are those super-thin ballet pumps or cheap canvas slip-ons... well, they might be just as bad as the heels!
Most of these shoes have zero arch support. None. Zilch! Your feet are basically hitting the hard pavement with every step without any cushioning. This causes your arches to collapse inward, which is a one-way ticket to heel spurs and chronic arch pain.
The Fix: If you love your flats, that’s fine, but look for ones that actually have a bit of a "sole" to them. Or better yet, pop in some supportive insoles. If you’re not sure what your arches need, we can talk about it during a session at my Abbotsbury clinic.
Living in beautiful Dorset, we are so lucky to have the coast on our doorstep! I see so many people strolling along the promenade in flip-flops. Now, for the beach? Perfect! For a three-mile walk? Not so much!
The problem with flip-flops is that your toes have to "scrunch" or grip the shoe to keep it on your foot. This constant gripping strains your tendons and can lead to some really painful inflammation. Plus, they offer about as much support as a wet noodle.
The Fix: Keep the flip-flops for the poolside or the sand. If you’re walking around Weymouth or Bridport for the day, choose a sturdy sandal with a back strap. Your toes will thank you for not having to work so hard!
Now, don’t laugh, but I see this all the time! Many of us are still buying the same shoe size we wore when we were 21. But here’s a little secret... our feet actually change shape as we get older!
As we age, our tendons and ligaments lose a bit of their "boing," and our feet tend to flatten out and get a bit longer. If you’re squeezing into shoes that are too small, you’re looking at a recipe for blisters, corns, and ingrown nails. It’s especially important for my clients with diabetes to ensure their shoes fit perfectly to avoid any pressure points that could lead to sores.
The Fix: Get your feet measured! Honestly, it’s not just for kids. When you’re at the shop, always try on both shoes, most of us have one foot slightly bigger than the other (mine's my left!). If you’re worried about how your shoes are affecting your skin, I offer specialized corns treatment and callus removal to get your feet back to their smooth, happy selves.
I used to be an early bird shopper too, get it done before the crowds, right? But for shoe shopping, it’s actually the worst time!
Throughout the day, as you walk and stand, your feet naturally swell. If you buy shoes at 9:00 AM, they might feel like a dream, but by 4:00 PM, they’ll feel like medieval torture devices!
The Fix: Go shoe shopping in the late afternoon or evening. That way, you’re buying for your feet at their biggest. It’s a simple trick, but it makes a world of difference for your daily comfort.
We all have that one pair of trainers or boots that are so comfy we never want to let them go. But look at the soles... are they worn down on one side?
When your shoes wear unevenly, it forces your foot to tilt at an odd angle. This creates friction, which is exactly how you end up needing callus removal. Worn-out cushioning also means your joints (knees and hips included!) are taking all the shock of the pavement.
The Fix: Most everyday shoes need replacing every 6 to 12 months if you’re wearing them regularly. A good tip is to rotate your shoes, don't wear the same pair two days in a row! It gives the cushioning time to "bounce back." If you’ve already developed some tough skin from your old favourites, I’d be delighted to help you out with some professional foot care Abbotsbury style!
I’ve seen people trying to hike up towards Maiden Castle in flimsy fashion sneakers. It breaks my heart! Using the wrong shoe for the wrong activity is a fast track to ankle sprains and even stress fractures.
The Fix: Match the shoe to the job! If you’re walking the dog through the Dorset fields, you need grip and ankle support. If you’re at the gym, you need impact protection. It sounds simple, but your feet are specialized tools, treat them that way!
If you live with diabetes, footwear isn't just about comfort, it’s about safety. Even a small rub from a poorly fitting shoe can become a big problem. That’s why regular check-ups with a Foot Health Practitioner are so vital. At Oggy’s Footcare, I provide thorough checks to make sure everything is looking healthy and to give you that peace of mind. Whether you're in Weymouth, Bridport, or Dorchester, I’m here to help you keep those feet in tip-top condition!
I know, I know... that’s a lot of "shoe-talk" for one day! But honestly, taking care of your feet is one of the best things you can do for your overall health.
If you’re struggling with fungal nails, painful verrucas, or you just feel like your feet need a bit of a "MOT," please do get in touch! I love meeting new people and helping them walk away with a spring in their step.
You can find me at my lovely Abbotsbury clinic, where the kettle is usually on and the chat is always friendly! We can tackle everything from cryotherapy for those stubborn spots to simple, professional nail cutting.
